ECOSOC: The Committee That Keeps the Press Busy

What began as a typical ECOSOC press conference quickly turned into a political theatre of accusations, denial, and dramatic justifications — all sparked by a modern scandal involving artificial intelligence.
Tensions flared when the Delegate of Brazil was accused by the press of using ChatGPT during committee proceedings. The delegate quickly denied the allegation, insisting that the AI tool was being used solely for external academic purposes unrelated to the session. However, the explanation did little to convince the room. Moments later, the Delegate of Malaysia presented a second photograph — this time clearly showing the ChatGPT interface open during an unmoderated caucus. The second piece of evidence sent shockwaves through the room, triggering loud table-tapping and pointed whispers as delegates began to openly question the credibility and conduct of Brazil.
As the scandal unfolded, attention shifted to the Delegate of Vietnam, who was questioned about his lack of participation in the General Speaker’s List. Though Vietnam attempted to respond, he was unable to provide a clear answer. Seizing the moment, the Delegate of Mexico intervened, asserting that Vietnam had contributed to Mexico’s resolution. However, when Vietnam finally managed to speak, he clarified that he was part of a completely different resolution bloc, contradicting Mexico’s statement. This inconsistency left many delegates surprised, casting doubt on Mexico’s credibility and raising questions about whether he was attempting to cover up for Vietnam.
As ECOSOC continues with its proceedings, the committee is now under scrutiny. With questions of ethics, decorum, and technology use hanging in the air, all eyes are on whether the committee can recover from this storm — or if the credibility of its work has already been compromised.
